Lampshades, Curtains, Atoms and Insects @ Wellcome Collection

Saturday, Stephanie and I had Wellcome Collection fun :) It was their first birthday so there was music and origami glee and mini cakes and lovely goody bags :D Plus the talk we went for in the first place. Twas about science inspiring design starting with Da Vinci, William Morris to Modernism to Timorous Beasties who did a window for Wellcome a while back. It was good hearing about how they designed the window and stories behind some of the prints...with mosquitos and veins etc. Oooh and Christopher Dresser got a mention cuz he started as a botanist. I love him...I don't know why exactly. But I went to the Christopher Dresser exhibition a few years ago at the V&A about 3 times.

Recycle Chair :D

A while ago my housemate brought these massive rolls of corrugated cardboard home that they were chucking out where she worked. They sat quietly and uselessly here for months. The card is weak and there was so much and no one wanted it. It was decided they should go to the dump. This made me sad...so much cardboard wasted :(

My friend Stephanie at Garbage! might want them for her recycling project I cried!

Are you going to roll them to her flat? Everyone else asked me.

The answer was no, and Stephanie most likely has plenty of rubbish to be recycling and making into exciting new things. But I thought maybe I could do something with it, even though my housemates hated the cardboard and wanted to get it out of the house and didn't want me being silly....so I accidentally enslaved a friend who was staying with me into helping me make a rocking chair. By cutting out layer by layer with scalpels. It only took an hour! :)

The result was good. My housemates actually like it! A roll of card has been saved. And it's quite comfy. Yay.

Hotelympia

Last Monday I went to Hotelympia, a trade show for the hospitality industry. I wanted to have a look since I was told my glowing bed curve looked more like a hotel product than a home product. So I went, then last week was so stressful leading up to presentation I really didn't want to go but had to as it was too late to back out...but it was interesting and I enjoyed it. And there were free food samples >:) I didn't take many because I was embarassed as a non business person...but I should have now I think on it. Damn embarrasment :)

The Design and Decor section was a little boring for me. Not really my taste. Though I saw etchglow signs in action - which was what I was looking at in my last project. And went to a good talk by the design director for Malmaison and Hotel Du Vin. I'm inexperienced when it comes to industry and it's good to hear what people in industry have to say. The actual design wasn't the most exciting, but very luxurious and pleasant. Images above are Hotel Du Vin.

Sampling - Acrylic and Wool

Playing with layering, light, shadow and illustration :) I'm pretty pleased with where my experimentation took me. It's not what I imagined...but I think I like it.
Now I'd like to really push the storytelling aspect.

Josef Frank

I heart Josef Frank's designs - they are so joyful and have a sort of innocence. Bright and beautiful. See more on the Svenskt Tenn website.

E.W.Moore & Son

Joy. I just found this site of vintage wallpaper :D Delicious. I was looking through my old journals of stuff-that-i-like, and found an old elle deco cutting...looked it up and mmm.
